There are less than 30 days until the July 4 World Cup Blue Marlin Championship (World Cup). Teams from around the world will compete in the 28th annual event to catch the biggest blue marlin over 500 pounds. They fish for 1 day for 8 hours in their time zone. There is only one overall winner in this tournament. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are at stake.
Teams can pay the $3000 registration fee on line with a credit card at www.bluemarlinworldcup.com. The entry fee covers everyone on the team. They can also pay by wire transfer, or until June 19, with a personal check. Complete rules and registration form as well as all past winners are on this web site.
There is also an optional $5000 BIG BLUE CHALLENGE division for teams that wish for a chance for even bigger winnings. This division was won with a 575 pound Kona blue in 2011 since the overall winner was not entered in that division.
The MAUI JIM team that won the World Cup in 2011 is offering this year's winning team a set of 4 Maui Jim high end sunglasses. Also, Black Bart Lures, the official lure of the World Cup, will present the winner with a spread of Black Bart lures plus shirts and caps.
Teams from Africa, Europe, the Eastern Atlantic islands, Bermuda, Bahamas, Central and South America and as far west as Hawaii are expected to compete in the World Cup which last year paid out over $425,000.
On July 4, real time catch by catch action will be posted on Twitter (bluemarlinwc) and Facebook (blue marlin world cup) as reports come in to tournament headquarters in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. The call in number is 954 561-9116.
A portion of tournament proceeds goes to support the IGFA and The Billfish Foundation.
