Spring is already in the air when an angler’s fancy turns to fishing tournaments. The most unique blue marlin tournament in the world is the 24th annual World Cup Blue Marlin Championship or “World Cup.” This one day, winner take all competition takes place annually on the Fourth of July. The 2007 winner from Bermuda took home $343,400 for his 728 lb blue marlin.

WORLD CUP EXPANDS REP COVERAGE
The World Cup Blue Marlin Championship (World Cup) has announced several new representatives for it's Fourth Of July, 2008 tournament. The World Cup is entering it's 25th year. Blue marlin over 500 pounds are the only species that count in this world wide event. There is no second place in the unique winner take all competition. The payout to one winner last July was $343,000.

The angler and crew aboard the Queen of Hearts in Bermuda had to wait until the early hours of July 5th to find out they had won the 23rd annual Fourth of July World Cup Blue Marlin Championship (World Cup). Standing in their way was the crew aboard the Hokulia I who had hooked a blue marlin late in the day in Kona, Hawaii. They battled their fish for almost two hours beyond the end of fishing, but in the end, they saw their fish was not big enough to beat the 728 lb blue marlin weighed in by Queen of Hearts. The Hokulia I tagged and released their fish.

Good luck to everyone fishing the 2007 World Cup. This tournament is dedicated to the memory of Jim Hardie. Jim was one of the founders of the World Cup and ran the event for many years. Jim was inducted into the Big Game Room Hall OF Fame at the Miami Boat Show a few months before he passed away in October of 2006. He is missed by his multitude of friends in the fishing world.

World Cup Blue Marlin Championship's Web Site Updated
The World Cup, in its twenty-third year, is fished on the Forth of July internationally wherever large blue marlin are found. The minimum size is 500 pounds and one winner takes all. Last year the winning fish, taken in the Cape Verde Islands, weighed 850 pounds and earned a World Cup record of $375,000. This year's winner is expected to take home an even larger amount.

Good news for international anglers.
The World Cup accountants agree that any non US citizens fishing outside US waters need not have any taxes withheld from their winnings. For US citizens, the law requires that a minimum percent of the winnings be withheld and reported to the IRS. The World Cup will send any US winner a tax form and the angler may be entitled to at least a partial refund depending on their tax bracket and the total amount of their tournament expenses for the year.

Mike Leech Joins World Cup
The World Cup Blue Marlin Championship has announced that the former president of the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), Mike Leech, has joined the tournament as tournament director. The World Cup, in its 23rd annual running, is fished world wide on the Fourth of July. Blue marlin is the only eligible species with a minimum size of 500 Lbs. The angler catching the heaviest marlin is the winner. There is no second place.
